protect yourself from air pollution

Air pollution in urban areas is increasing due to more vehicles, construction, and industrial emissions. As a city resident, it is imperative to recognise the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health. As one of the best retirement homes in Bangalore, we share a few useful insights for seniors on how they can protect themselves from air pollution.  1. Use face masks: The air in the city is filled with dust, smoke, and other harmful pollutants that contain particulate matter. Inhaling these pollutants regularly can severely damage the respiratory system and lead to various diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, and even lung cancer. To protect yourself from air pollution, it is advisable to wear an N95 or N99 mask whenever you venture outside. These masks have multiple layers that filter out the dust particles, ensuring comfortable breathing. 2. Air purifying plants: Air pollution affects outdoor air quality and can also deteriorate indoor air. One effective way to combat indoor air pollution is by keeping plants in your living space. You can keep air-purifying plants such as Aloe Vera, Ivy, and Spider plants. These plants can trap impurities in the air and filter fresh, breathable air into your home. 3. Use air-purifiers: Air purifiers play an important role in maintaining clean and breathable indoor air quality. In densely populated urban areas, the air quality is often compromised, and it can be suffocating in cramped spaces. Air purifiers can be useful in removing dust particles and toxins from the air. 4. Steam bath: Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the steam bath can relax your air passage and eliminate any toxins that may have accumulated in the canal. Steam can help moisturise the airways and clear any mucus build up, promoting optimal respiratory health. In the presence of harmful pollutants in the air, regular steam baths can be beneficial in maintaining good respiratory health. 5. Improve home ventilation: Recirculating indoor air can lead to an increase in indoor air pollution, which is why it is important to allow sufficient ventilation. Open windows during specific hours to allow fresh air to enter and remove indoor air pollutants. Also, you can install kitchen chimneys to direct kitchen smoke and grease outside through pipes. 6. Take proper precautions: By taking precautionary measures, you can reduce the harmful effects of air pollution. Here are a few to protect yourself against air pollution. To stay informed about the air pollution levels in your area, check the daily air pollution forecast. You can do this online or through various apps. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is the standard measure for assessing the air quality in a specific location. A reading between 0-50 indicates good air quality, while levels above can pose a risk, particularly for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. Use this information to plan your activities and avoid areas with elevated pollution levels. Take regular showers after spending considerable time outside to cleanse your body of any accumulated dirt and pollutants. To build immunity against the harmful effects of air pollution, maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet to obtain all the necessary nutrients. Exercise daily to maintain good respiratory health. Practising pranayama, a type of yogic breathing exercise, can also be beneficial in improving lung function and reducing the impact of air pollution on the body. To ensure clean air at home, it is important to inspect the filters of your air conditioners and replace them as needed. Useful insights on rustic charm and home decor by one of the leading senior citizen retirement homes in Chennai

rustic charm and home decor

Rustic charm combines the beauty of natural materials and the simplicity of country living to create warm and inviting spaces. If you prefer a natural and traditional look for your home interiors, incorporating elements such as plants, stone, and wood can enhance the indigenous beauty of your space. As one of the leading senior citizen retirement homes in Chennai, we share some useful insights on rustic charm and home decor.  1. Select earthy tones: Choose earthy tones to create a comfortable and hospitable atmosphere in your home. Warm, muted colours such as green, brown, tan, and beige can bring the outdoors inside and enhance the beauty of the textures and styles of your walls. Soft colours such as light blue, powder pink, and yellow can also be used for a modern rustic look. Using these rustic colours in various elements of your home, from walls and floors to furniture and accessories, can create a warm and inviting environment. 2. Buy wooden furniture: The warmth and natural beauty of wood can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room. From the intricate grain patterns to the rich, earthy tones, each piece of wooden furniture is unique and has a story to tell. If you are looking for a classic and versatile furniture style to amp up the rustic charm of your living space, consider buying wooden furniture such as bookshelves, crockery units, or overhead lamps. 3. Mix and match different elements: To create a sense of balance in your home interiors, you can mix and match different elements in equal proportions. Incorporate materials such as bare brick, stone, wooden flooring, floor tiles, rugs, and ceiling tiles to achieve a rustic look. Natural stone floorings, such as marble, granite, slate, limestone, and terracotta, can add sophistication and charm to your space. Consider adding a quirky element, such as a faux fur rug, to elevate the overall look of the space. 4. Add vintage pieces: Vintage pieces such as wall clocks, sofa sets, or flower vases can add a touch of nostalgia and warmth to your rustic home decor. Antique shops selling old valuables are great places to find such pieces, which can be made of wood, terracotta, or metals. Incorporating vintage elements such as a multi-purpose wooden trunk, hanging lanterns, or a grandfather clock with a pendulum can revamp the entire space with an old-world charm. These vintage pieces add a bespoke element to your home that complements the overall rustic aesthetic. 5. Embrace imperfections: Rather than concealing or disguising flaws, rustic decor embraces them as part of its charm. The imperfections contribute to the unique and appealing visuals of rustic decor. Including imperfect furniture and decor can add authenticity to your space and imbue it with history and character. Unlike a generic, impersonal space, this results in a distinctive ambiance that tells a story. For instance, the knots in wooden furniture or textured walls, even withered paintings and mirrors – all add character to the space, reflecting your personal style and values. How to maintain a healthy sleep routine while travelling: useful insights by one of the best retirement homes in India

How to maintain a healthy sleep routine while travelling

Travelling is the perfect opportunity to discover new cultures, cuisines, and historical landmarks that can broaden your horizons and create lasting memories. However, it is important to remember that travelling can also take a toll on your body and mind. Changes in weather and time zones can disrupt your eating and sleeping patterns, leading to travel fatigue and jet lag that can negatively impact your health. Hence, it is important to maintain a healthy sleep routine while travelling to ensure that you can enjoy your trip to the fullest. By getting a good and comfortable sleep, you can stay energised and refreshed throughout your journey and make the most of every moment. As one of the best retirement homes in India, we share with you some of the useful insights on maintaining a healthy sleep routine while travelling:  1. Minimise pre-travel stress If you are experiencing pre-travel stress, it is important to take precautionary measures and plan ahead. Travel-related stress can have a negative impact on your mood and peace of mind throughout the entire journey. It can cause constant worrying about unnecessary things, preventing you from relaxing and enjoying the trip. This can also severely affect your sleep schedule. To handle travel-related stress, it is recommended that you do all your bookings in advance, create an itinerary, and plan your travel necessities in an organised manner. Do not wait until the last minute to pack or scramble for basic items such as keys and toiletries.  2. Avoid overexertion: Travelling can often lead to fatigue due to the physical demands of trekking rough paths, driving long distances, and dealing with varying weather conditions. This exhaustion can disrupt your regular sleep schedule, making it difficult to enjoy your trip. To reduce the impact on your sleep schedule, you can avoid excessive strain and ensure that you take enough rest breaks. For instance, if a destination is too far, it is better to plan to visit it another day rather than pushing yourself too hard. Also, taking short naps during travel can help you recharge and recover. To avoid travel fatigue, you should also stay hydrated and have healthy snacks on hand. 3. Maintain your sleep schedule: Extensive travel can disrupt your normal sleep schedule, making it challenging to get the rest you need. To address this issue, it is important to establish good sleep hygiene or a routine. To develop a sleep hygiene routine that is tailored to your travel, consider activities such as reading, meditation, stretching, or enjoying a relaxing tea session. Continuously engaging in these activities while you are on the road can help your brain receive similar signals, leading to better sleep regardless of your location or time zone. 4. Make your sleep environment comfortable: A different bed and an unfamiliar place can make it difficult to fall asleep. However, you can make your sleep environment more comfortable by adding a calming aroma such as lavender or eucalyptus to soothe your nerves. You can purchase an oil diffuser or a scented spray to create a calming atmosphere. Bringing a familiar blanket from home or playing soothing music can also help you feel more relaxed and comfortable in your sleep environment. 5. Prepare for time zone changes: Travelling to different time zones can be challenging, as it disrupts your sleep schedule and affects your overall health. This is because your body is used to a certain time for sunrises and sunsets, which can be different in the new location. To cope with these changes, it is important to adjust your sleeping time accordingly. To prepare for a trip to a different time zone, it is important to determine how much you will need to adjust your sleep and wake times to synchronise with the new location. It is recommended to allow enough time to make these adjustments gradually, starting by going to bed earlier and waking up earlier (or later, depending on the direction of travel) to help your body adjust to the new time zone before you arrive. Best ways to handle and prevent travel-related stress and anxiety for seniors

Travelling can be an exciting way to see the world, encounter new cultures, navigate unfamiliar streets, and meet new people. The experience of travelling can be wholesome and rewarding. However, travel stress can make your journey less enjoyable and even prevent you from having a fulfilling travel experience. Fortunately, there are ways to manage travel anxiety effectively, so you can travel confidently and without anxiety. As one of the leading senior living communities we share with you some of the useful  tips for handling travel-related stress and anxiety: 1. To effectively manage your travel-related stress, the first step is to identify the specific cause or causes of your anxiety. It could be a single factor or a combination of factors that give rise to your stress. Pinpointing the root cause of your anxiety can help you address the issue more effectively. For example, if you have a fear of heights or flying, it might not be best to travel by airways, at least initially. Similarly, if you fear getting lost in an unfamiliar city, you can address the issue by studying the topography of the place and referring to a map. By identifying your specific fears and concerns, you can develop strategies to manage them effectively and enjoy your travels with greater peace of mind. 2. Many people experience severe anxiety right before a trip, which can cause panic attacks. If you are prone to such anxiety, it is helpful to plan ahead. This involves making all necessary arrangements, such as booking your hotel and arranging transportation well in advance, to avoid the stress of last-minute arrangements. Planning ahead also enables you to feel more in control of the situation and prepares you for your trip. You can research your destination, check the weather forecast during your visit, and book local transportation and tourist attractions in advance to avoid long waits at ticket counters. Additionally, booking accommodation and transportation in advance can help you save money and avoid surges in prices during peak seasons. Overall, taking the time to plan ahead can help you alleviate pre-trip anxiety and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience. 3. Checking in early can save you from the hassle of waiting in long lines and give you plenty of time to generate your boarding pass at the airport or find your seat on a train. You can also take advantage of web check-in facilities offered by many airlines to check in online before arriving at the airport. Arriving early at the train station can also help you identify the platform or compartment for your seat. By checking in early, you can reduce pre-travel stress and have more time to settle and relax before embarking on your journey. 4. If you are aware of your travel-related stress, there are different relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. These techniques can soothe your nerves and prevent panic attacks during overwhelming or stressful situations. For example, if you feel nervous while on a plane, you can close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths until the plane takes off. You can also listen to music on your phone while in flight mode. Also, you can download a relaxation or mindfulness app to your phone to use during your travels. Millet recipes for seniors

Millets are nutritious and healthy. They require minimal water and have a long shelf life, making them ideal for storage. Millets are rich in starch and protein. They are an excellent option for a wholesome meal, particularly for seniors. As one of the best senior citizen homes in Karnataka, we share some of the healthy millet recipes for seniors. 1. Millet khichdi: Ingredients:  ½ cup foxtail millets ½ cup moong daal 1 cup vegetables of your choice ¼ cup methi leaves or spinach 1 diced tomato 1 teaspoon grated ginger Dry spices: ½ teaspoon cumin seeds, ¼ teaspoon red chilli powder, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, and ½ teaspoon garam masala Salt to taste Procedure  Wash and soak the foxtail millets for about an hour. This cooks the millets quickly. In a pressure cooker add ghee and let it heat. Add cumin seeds and let it splutter. Add ginger until it emits a nice aroma. Add veggies and tomatoes. Saute them for a few minutes. Add the spices and cook for a few minutes on low flame until the tomatoes are mushy. Add the soaked and drained millets and daal. Saute them for a while. Adjust the salt and add water. Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the millets are cooked to the right consistency. Once done, open the lid and give it a final mix. Add a little ghee on top and serve warm with pickle and papad. 2. Kodo millet roti:  Ingredients:  1 cup Kodo millet flour 1/2 tsp salt 1/2-1 cup lukewarm water Ghee/oil for cooking Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add Kodo millet flour and salt. Gradually add lukewarm water to the flour mixture and knead to form a soft and pliable dough. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape them into round balls. Using a rolling pin, flatten each ball into a thin circular disc, dusting it with flour if necessary to prevent sticking. Heat a tawa or non-stick pan over medium heat. Place the flattened roti on the tawa or pan and cook for about 30 seconds on each side. Add ghee or oil on top of the roti and cook for another 30 seconds on each side or until it turns golden brown. Remove from heat and serve hot with your favourite side dish. 3. Ragi wheat dosa: Ingredients:  1 cup ragi flour 1 cup wheat flour 2 cups buttermilk (adjust as per preferred consistency) Salt to taste Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add ragi flour and wheat flour. Add salt to it and mix well to make an even distribution. Gradually add buttermilk and stir continuously with a whisk to avoid lumps. Mix the batter evenly and consistently to incorporate air into the mixture. Cover and set aside for 6-8 hours or overnight to allow the batter to ferment. After fermentation, stir the batter well and adjust the consistency with water if necessary. Heat a flat non-stick tawa over medium-high heat. Once hot, pour a ladleful of batter on the tawa and spread it evenly in circular motion. Add oil from the sides so that the dosa cooks evenly on top and does not stick to the pan. Cook until the bottom turns golden brown and the top is cooked. Flip the dosa and cook the other side for another 30 seconds to 1 minute. Fold the dosa into half and take it off the heat. Serve hot with your favourite coconut chutney and sambar. 4. Mixed millet bhel puri: Ingredients:  1 cup pearl millets 1 cup ragi flakes 3 cups puffed rice 1/2 cup bhujia 2 tbsp chaat masala 3 tbsp black sesame seeds 2 chopped onions 2 chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons lime juice 2 tablespoons chopped green chilies 3 tablespoons green chutney 2 tablespoons sweet tamarind chutney Chopped fresh coriander leaves Pomegranate seeds (optional) Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add pearl millets, ragi flakes, and puffed rice. Add salt and roasted peanuts to it. Add black sesame seeds, chaat masala, and bhujia mix. Give it a good mix. Then add chopped onions and mix again. Add green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney and mix everything well. Finally, add chopped tomatoes, lime juice, and chopped green chilies. Mix well and adjust salt if necessary. Garnish with bhujia, fresh coriander leaves, and pomegranate seeds (optional). Serve immediately and enjoy. Useful insights on painting and drawing for seniors

April 22, 2023

Categories : Activities For Seniors Citizens | Retirement homes | Senior Living

Art is an excellent means of expression regardless of one’s age. However, it becomes even more advantageous for individuals as they age, as it boosts their emotional well-being and offers numerous health benefits. Seniors can benefit greatly from engaging in creative activities such as painting and drawing. As one of the leading senior living communities in India, we share with you some of the useful insights on painting and drawing:  Simple projects: Take up simple projects and start small. In case you are new to painting, it is likely that your painting instructor will teach you to start with simple pencil drawings such as shapes and figures. These do not require a lot of experience and involve drawing simple objects such as trees, fruits, and sceneries. Different mediums: You can discover your own creative potential by experimenting with different drawing and painting mediums such as acrylic and watercolours. This process can be enjoyable and rewarding, allowing you to express yourself creatively while developing new skills and techniques. Right tools: The right tools can make painting a much more enjoyable experience. Pencils are the most common tool for drawing. They come in different hardness levels, from 9H (hard) to 9B (soft). Charcoal is also a popular tool that can be used to create both light and dark lines. Erasers are also a must-have tool for artists – they are used for correcting mistakes and creating highlights. Choosing the right paper is also important for drawing – you can choose from different papers such as sketch paper, drawing paper, and watercolour paper. Classes or workshops: Attend different art classes and workshops hosted by eminent and popular artists in the city. They will help you gain knowledge on different techniques and brush strokes. Enjoy the process: Painting and drawing is a way of self-expression. When you create something based on your perception of perfection, it is unique and equally beautiful. Avoid thinking about achieving perfection. Art is about creation. Enjoy the journey of creation rather than stress about the final product.   Benefits of painting and drawing for seniors: Joining a painting class can provide you with an excellent opportunity to socialise and interact with like-minded individuals. Painting classes offer you a chance to communicate with other students and develop new relationships. Even shy and introverted seniors can benefit from painting workshops, as they can gain exposure and create meaningful connections with fellow art lovers. Painting can help you exercise and improve your fine motor skills. As you handle and use a brush correctly, while keeping your hands steady, you can improve your body coordination. Regular painting can also help prevent stiffness and inflammation, reducing pain from conditions such as arthritis and hypertension. Painting is a creative art form that lets you express yourself. When you pick up your brushes and start to colour, you are likely to experience feelings of pleasure, happiness, and satisfaction. Also, painting can have a meditative and calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety. It can also improve focus and enhance relaxation. At our senior citizen apartments in India, we offer a lively and warm environment that helps residents freely express themselves. We host different classes and activities based on their interests. Our goal is to help them lead an active, happy, and fun-filled retirement.   Want to know more on senior apartments and independent living? Explore our senior citizen apartments in India. Crime prevention tips for seniors by one of the leading retirement communities in India

By being proactive and taking preventative measures, seniors can feel more secure and confident in their daily lives. Seniors should also stay up-to-date with local crime trends and take note of any changes in their neighbourhood that may affect their safety. As one of the leading retirement communities in India, we share some of the steps that seniors can take to protect themselves from crime and reduce their risk of becoming a victim. 1. Pay close attention to surroundings: They should be vigilant when travelling to unfamiliar places. Also, they should avoid poorly-lit places or areas that feel unsafe. Seniors must keep their wallets and identity documents in a secure location and carry their cell phones with them when leaving the house so that they can easily get in touch with their family members in case of an emergency. 2. Install a security system: Security systems typically include motion sensors, security cameras, and alarm bells that can detect unusual activity and deter potential intruders, thereby ensuring safety. Also, seniors should always use a peephole or intercom to identify visitors before opening their doors. They should always be careful about opening the door to strangers. They should not let anyone into their house unless they are certain that the person is trustworthy. 3. Proper lighting: Intruders often use darkness to their advantage when breaking into homes. Hence, seniors should install external lights and mount them high enough so they cannot be tampered with. When seniors are away from home, timers and home-automation tools can be used to make it seem as if someone is in the house.  4. Store valuables such as cash or  jewellery in safes and lockers: To protect their valuable items, seniors should store them in secure safes and lockers. They should avoid leaving valuables lying around the house in plain sight. 5. Draw curtains and blinds: Drawing curtains and blinds can prevent burglars from easily assessing a home’s layout and the location of valuable items.  6. Exercise caution when approached by strangers in public: Seniors should be careful when approached by strangers, because they may become victims of pickpocketing or other forms of theft. 7. Buddy system: Seniors are encouraged to adopt the buddy system, which involves leaving their homes accompanied by someone. This companion can be a friend, family member, or neighbour who can provide support and assistance to seniors when they are outside.  8. Careful with finances: Seniors should be careful of scam artists who may try to trick them into giving away their personal information, such as PINs and OTPs.  Also, seniors should never disclose their personal or financial information to anyone over the phone or the internet. You can make your children and other family members part of decision-making:  When making a big decision, you often consult your children, siblings, and other family members. A virtual tour allows you to include more people even if they live in different cities. You get a better understanding of the layout and amenities: A virtual tour lets you explore the layout and amenities of a senior living community. You can see the size and layout of the rooms, common areas, and outdoor spaces, as well as the features and finishes of the property. This can help you get a better understanding of whether the home meets your needs and preferences. You can see the property in real-time: Some virtual tours are live, allowing you to interact with a representative of the retirement home and ask questions as you tour the property. This can give you a more authentic experience and help you get a better sense of the home and its amenities. You will get a better understanding of the neighbourhood: A virtual tour can also give you a sense of the surrounding neighbourhood and community. You can see the location of the senior living home in relation to local amenities. This can help you determine if the location is suitable for your needs and lifestyle. You get the time to frame your questions for the actual visit: If you opt for a pre-recorded video tour, you can pause or go back to a section and write down your follow-up questions. This can make your in-person visit more productive and fruitful.
