What is healthy selfishness and how can seniors cultivate it? Useful insights by one of the best-gated community villas in Coimbatore

January 26, 2023

Categories : Senior Health Tips | Senior Living Tips

The word ‘selfishness’ often has a negative connotation. It is assumed that being selfish is wrong. The unfortunate consequence of this idea is that people feel guilty when they care for themselves. But do you know that you can develop a ‘healthy’ form of selfishness? Healthy selfishness is defined as a healthy respect for your happiness and joy. It means taking time for yourself and not feeling bad about it. When you retire, it becomes more important that you take care of your mind, body, and soul.  Cultivating healthy selfishness means: Creating healthy boundaries Taking out time for yourself Having a healthy dose of self-respect  Balancing your own needs with the needs of others Advocating your needs  As one of the best-gated community villas in Coimbatore, we share with you some tips to cultivate healthy selfishness:  Learn to say no Often you may find yourself in situations where you want to say ‘no’ but do not because you do not want to disappoint others or hurt their feelings. However, it is important to learn when and how to say ‘no’.  You need to say ‘no’ to tasks when you know you have too much on your plate and you cannot handle additional things. Moreover, when you gracefully turn down something, you have more time and energy for doing things that you enjoy. Not doing so will leave you feeling lethargic and overwhelmed.  Seek support Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is actually a show of strength. If you are finding it difficult to balance your daily responsibilities, seeking help from a loved one can help you better prioritize your time. Seeking a helping hand with errands or speaking to a counselor can help put things in perspective.  Evaluate what brings you happiness You may often find yourself doing activities that are necessary. But what about activities that bring you joy? A good way to practice healthy selfishness is to understand what you want your life to look like. Reflecting on your long and short-term wants will help you create a rough plan as to how you can engage in activities that will make you happy.  Set aside a daily ‘me-time’ Carving out 30 minutes a day for yourself is a great way to spend some time with the most important person in your life — that is you. ‘Me time’ is the conscious effort of taking time out to rejuvenate. The idea of ‘me time’ can vary from one person to another. You may use your ‘me-time’ for: Listening to music  Practicing yoga  Doing low-impact exercises  Going for a walk  Spending time close to nature  Taking a warm bath  Reading a book   Exercise and eat right A very important part of living a fulfilled retirement life is to be physically healthy. Try to incorporate gyming, walking, jogging, tennis, swimming, or yoga into your schedule. It has been found that exercise can boost self-esteem and reduce anxiety and depression. Also, ensure that you eat healthily. Eating a balanced diet can help maintain a healthy weight and feel energetic. It has been found that a plant-based diet has a beneficial role in healthy ageing.  Looking for the best-gated community villas in Coimbatore where you can enjoy doing things you like the most?  Serene Shenbagam by Columbia Pacific has 71 units of independent villas. Categories : Senior Health Tips

Our habits—how we feel, think, and act— has an impact on our physical and emotional well- being. Many seniors often notice that changing certain unhealthy habits has helped them feel better. If you have developed unhealthy habits, it does not mean that you have failed somehow. It simply means that you have lost connection with your true self and intentions. You have mistaken short-term happiness from unhealthy habits for real happiness and well-being. To break bad habits, it is important that you step back and understand certain habits are hurting your overall well-being. As one of the best gated community villas in Coimbatore, we have curated 5 unhealthy habits to quit for better mental health:   Habit 1: Always saying ‘yes’ to family and friends:   You often want to please everyone s and fear that you will disappoint others if you turn down their request. However, there are times when it is important to put your own needs first and say ‘no’. If you are already feeling overwhelmed or over-committed, adding one more thing to your list can only increase your stress. Additionally, saying ‘yes’ all the time can create the expectation that you are always available and willing to do things, even when you are not.   Habit 2: Leading a sedentary lifestyle:   A sedentary lifestyle is bad for your overall health, but it can also take a toll on your mental health. It has been shown that exercise can help to overcome depression and it can also help to prevent anxiety and other mental health problems. Regular exercise can boost your confidence, distract your mind from worries, and help you cope with stressful situations in a healthy way.   Habit 3: Fostering negative thoughts:   Negative thinking is something that everyone experiences from time to time. However, when these thoughts become frequent and start to interfere with your ability to live your life, they can become a problem.   Habit 4: Isolating yourself:   It can be easy to withdraw from people and reality when you are feeling down. However, doing so usually has an adverse reaction as it makes you feel lonely and even more sad.   Habit 5: Not taking care of your needs:   It is easy to get into the habit of putting your own needs last, but that is not sustainable in the long run. At some point, you are going to experience burnout.   Habit 6: Excessive usage of smartphones:   While social media can be a great way to stay connected with friends and family, it should not replace in-person social interactions. According to a study, excessive usage of social media can be associated with the risk of anxiety and depression. If you find yourself spending too much time on social media, you should: Uninstall social media apps Establish no-tech zones at home     Looking for gated community villas in Coimbatore?   Explore Serene Shenbagam by Columbia Pacific. Maintaining a healthy weight after retirement: tips for seniors curated by one of the best gated community villas in Coimbatore

Categories : Senior Health Tips | Senior Living Tips

If you are a senior, maintaining a healthy weight is important. If you do not maintain a healthy weight, you are at an increased risk of suffering from diabetes and hypertension. As one of the best senior living projects in Coimbatore, we share with you some useful tips on maintaining a healthy weight after retirement: Have a high protein and low-calorie diet: A high-protein diet can help you maintain a healthy weight. Protein takes longer to digest than other nutrients – hence, it can help you feel full for longer after eating. You can increase your protein intake over the course of a week. Remember that calories still count, so make sure that you choose only healthy sources of protein, such as seafood, lean meat, low-fat dairy, soy, seeds, nuts, and eggs. Also, include healthy carbohydrates in your diet to feel energetic. Good sources of healthy carbs include sweet potatoes, bananas, whole grains, and oranges. Eat small and frequent meals:  Eating small and balanced meals every three hours helps to keep your body in fat-burning mode, as it prevents the body from going into starvation mode. In starvation mode, the body burns calories as slowly as possible to conserve its energy. Small and frequent meals help reset your metabolism and keep your body in the fat-burning mode. Eat plenty of fibre: High-fibre foods such as apples (with skin), pears, berries, whole grains, legumes, and nuts promote weight loss by helping you feel full. They also offer other health benefits such as reducing inflammation, promoting bowel movement, and keeping blood sugar levels in check.  Walk at least 30 minutes a day: Walking is a great way to stay in shape and improve your overall health. The number of calories you burn walking depends on how much you weigh and your walking speed. Work out regularly: Indoor cycling, swimming, aerobics, yoga, and dance are great forms of exercise that can help you manage weight and stay fit and healthy as you age. Drink sufficient water: The body needs water to burn fat. Water helps the body to metabolise stored fat or carbohydrates. It is a good idea to drink water before meals. As per a study, drinking at least half a litre of water 30 minutes before a meal can help in reducing body fat.  Note: The amount of water you need to drink may vary depending on factors such as your gender, activity level, and local climate. Anxiety disorders can make it difficult to manage day-to-day lives. Seniors who suffer from anxiety disorders are more vulnerable to developing feelings of social isolation and depression. They are even more likely to fall ill. If you are above 60 and looking for information on managing anxiety, here is a useful read for you. As one of the best gated community villas in Coimbatore, we have curated a list of insights on anxiety in seniors: What are the symptoms of anxiety? Everyone experiences anxiety in different ways, so it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms. Some common symptoms of anxiety include: Feeling of restlessness Tiring easily Difficulty concentrating Nausea or stomach problems Prolonged and excessive worry that feels out of control Muscle tension or muscle aches Sleeping too much or too little Here we discuss the most common anxiety triggers: Loss of independence: As you age, you may start to experience difficulties with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and cooking. In some cases, these difficulties are due to physical limitations such as mobility issues or chronic pain. Whatever the cause, loss of independence can be a difficult adjustment for you as you may feel you are unable to do the things you used to. Health problems or chronic pain: As you age, the body becomes more susceptible to health problems. Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons for anxiety. The constant worry about your health can take a toll on your mental well-being and make you feel like your life is out of control. If you are struggling with anxiety, it is important to seek help from a mental health professional. Talking to someone who understands what you are going through can help you find ways to manage anxiety and improve your quality of life. Grief: Losing a loved one is always difficult, and it is normal to feel overwhelmed by grief. The death of a family member or close friend can lead to a feeling of isolation. It is important to remember that grief is a natural process and that there are ways to cope with your loss. Talking to a counselor or therapist can be helpful, as they can provide support and guidance. Loneliness and isolation: With age, the social circle often starts to shrink. With elderly friends passing away and family members moving away, it can be tough to maintain the same level of social interaction that you are used to. Even if you have friends and family in the area, difficulties with transportation, mobility, or illness can make it tough to get out and see them.
