Dos and don'ts for seniors

Getting enough sleep is important to our health. When we do not get enough sleep, we can have trouble with memory and attention span and our reaction time slows down. We might also become irritable and moody. One of the best ways to make up for lost sleep is through a daytime nap. Taking a nap can help reduce fatigue and restore energy levels during the day. If you are a senior and looking for helpful insights on napping, this is a useful read.  As one of the leading retirement communities in India, we share a few dos and don’ts of napping for seniors.  Dos: Limit your nap to 20 minutes to avoid feeling groggy after napping. Take a nap in the early afternoon, as napping after 3 PM can interfere with night-time sleep. Take a nap in a quiet, dark environment as it can help facilitate restful sleep. This is because loud noises or excessive brightness can disrupt the brain’s ability to transition into deeper phases of sleep. Therefore, finding a space that is free from outside noise and light can be helpful for maximising the benefits of a nap. Set an alarm so you do not sleep for more than 20 minutes. Wearing an eye mask while napping can help block light and create a restful sleep environment. Even in a dark room, small amounts of light can seep through curtains or around the edges of doors, which can be enough to disrupt your nap. Before taking a nap, use relaxation techniques to fall asleep quickly. Deep breathing is an effective relaxation technique that can be used before taking a nap. Give yourself a few minutes to wake up when you have taken a nap. You might feel groggy or disoriented after waking up. To help ease this transition, stretch and move your body, and drink some water to rehydrate. After a nap, it is important to re-energise your body and mind. To re-energise after a nap, eat a healthy snack or meal. In order to keep yourself feeling full and satisfied after a nap, choose food items that are rich in fibre, protein, and healthy fats. These options can provide a quick energy boost and help you power through the rest of your day. You can also listen to upbeat music as it can improve your mood and get you ready for the rest of the day. Don’ts:  Napping should not be relied upon as a replacement for proper sleep. Deep REM sleep cycles are necessary for maintaining optimal health and these cycles can only be achieved through longer periods of sleep. Drinking caffeine after 3 PM can disrupt your nap. Using sleep medications to induce short naps may reduce the overall quality of naps. Combining alcohol with a nap can make you feel drowsy and disoriented when you wake up. Note: If you only have a few minutes to spare, close your eyes and take a brief rest. Even a brief rest can reduce stress, which can help you relax a little and give you more energy. Tips for creating a healthy breakfast routine for seniors by one of the best retirement homes in India

A healthy breakfast is important for seniors as it can jump-start their metabolism, increasing the amount of glucose their body burns for energy. Also, healthy breakfast can help decrease food cravings, which can prevent overeating later in the day. If you are a senior and looking for information on creating a healthy breakfast routine, here is a useful read. As one of the best retirement homes in India, we share some of the useful tips on establishing a healthy breakfast routine that you should follow: Tip 1: Plan ahead to eat a balanced breakfast:   Your breakfast should be well planned. However, pre-planning does not mean pre-cutting fruits and vegetables as they can lose their natural properties and become discoloured. Instead, consider pre-planning by preparing a dosa batter or a bowl of overnight oats.  To create a balanced breakfast, three varieties of food groups, such as dairy, protein or fibre-rich foods, and fruits should be included in the diet. These foods provide energy, keeping you full for a longer time. Also, take time to enjoy your breakfast as it helps you relax and unwind. It can help you feel more energised and alert as well. Tip 2: Stay hydrated: When you sleep for six to eight hours a day, your body goes without any water consumption for a long time. To quickly rehydrate your body, it is recommended that you drink two or three glasses of water right when you wake up. To add more hydration, consider including tea or fresh fruit juice in your breakfast. You can also infuse your water with lemon, herbs, or cucumber. Coconut water is a refreshing option for breakfast. It is packed with plenty of nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants.  Tip 3: Try new foods to add variety to your breakfast: You can try fusion foods by taking a traditional dish and giving it a continental twist. For example, the humble chapati can be turned into a taco shell. You can also add leftover veggies or fresh greens to your meal. The fibre in these nutritious additions can provide an added punch to your meal, helping you feel more satisfied and less hungry as the day goes on.  Tip 4: Avoid sugary and processed foods: Consuming high sugar food in the morning can affect your digestive system, leading to discomfort throughout the day. If you have a sweet tooth, add honey or fresh fruits such as mango, strawberries, and grapes to your breakfast routine. Also, avoid processed or canned foods such as canned juice, energy drinks, or protein bars. Instead of relying on processed or canned foods, consider making homemade alternatives. It is important to find a breakfast routine that works best for you. Whether you prefer a bowl filled with fresh fruits and yoghurt, or paratha with a bowl of veggies, it is essential to choose a meal that suits your taste and needs. You can experiment with different breakfast options until you find the one that you enjoy. You can note down how you feel after eating breakfast. Certain foods make you feel happy, whereas others have the opposite effect.  Are you looking for the best retirement homes in India that promote positive ageing? Strategies for building resilience in seniors

Strategies for building resilience in seniors

As a senior, you can benefit greatly from building resilience, as it helps you deal with the physical, emotional, and social changes that come with age. You can learn to be resilient by creating social support, fostering a positive outlook, and building positive memories. Additionally, you must learn how to control your thoughts and emotions. This will help you deal with difficult situations in a more positive way.  If you are looking for information on strategies for building resilience, here is a useful read. As one of the leading retirement homes in India, we have curated a list of useful insights to help seniors build resilience.  1. Stay positive: Resilience is closely linked with optimism. Hence, focusing on the positive things around you can help you keep an optimistic outlook towards the future even during challenging times. Being optimistic involves many aspects such as being aware of potential problems, choosing to focus on the good things in your life, and finding the right solutions. By being optimistic, you can stay away from depression or anxiety, which can make it hard for you to bounce back during difficult times.  One of the effective ways to stay optimistic during challenging times is to look for the silver lining. Look at what you can learn from the situation and how it will make you stronger in the future or think about how grateful you are for all that you have.  You can also hang positive quotes or affirmations in your living space to improve your mood and overall well-being. Some of the popular motivational quotes include:  “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”- – Martin Luther King, Jr. “Pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it.” – Paulo Coelho “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller 2. Develop and maintain a strong social network: When you are feeling stressed, reaching out to empathetic people who understand what you are going through can be a great source of support. Maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, neighbours, and former colleagues is a great way to stay strong during difficult times. It is also important to build new relationships with compassionate and understanding people.  You can also join a support group where you can meet other people who can relate to your situation. These groups are often based on a specific issue, such as depression or anxiety, but some groups are open to everyone who needs help.  If you live in a retirement community, you can connect with others who are in a similar stage of life and may be facing similar challenges and opportunities.  3. Manage stress and learn to respond to challenging situations: Building stress management habits is a good way to stay resilient. You have to understand that there are situations which are beyond your control and you need to be flexible and focus on things that are within your control.  Also, you need to be proactive and decisive about your actions. In order to be resilient, you must take on challenges one step at a time. If you try to do too much all at once, it can become overwhelming and cause anxiety or depression. 4. Take care of your physical and mental well-being: It is important that you take care of your physical and mental health as you adjust to the new changes in your life. It may be tempting at times to neglect yourself, but do not give in. To combat stress and anxiety, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising, and pursuing interests that are both stimulating and relaxing. Take enough rest and do not exert yourself.  Mindful journaling, yoga, and other spiritual practices such as prayer or meditation can also help you build connections and restore hope, allowing you to cope with traumatic experiences more easily. When you journal, meditate, or pray, think about the positive aspects of your life and recall the things you are grateful for.  Also, establish healthy boundaries with people who are negative and do not show empathy for others. You may also want to re-evaluate the amount of time you spend watching news and reading about politics on social media. Spending too much time consuming negative stories can change your outlook, making it difficult for you to maintain an optimistic attitude. Looking for retirement homes for NRIs in India? Tips for sticking to your retirement budget

April 23, 2023

Categories : Retirement Planning Tips | Senior Living Tips

Creating a retirement budget is an effective way to manage your finances. However, staying committed to it can often be a difficult task. As one of the leading senior living communities in India, we share some useful tips to help you stick to your retirement budget.   1. Limit unnecessary expenses: Making a monthly budget is an excellent way to get a handle on your expenses and identify areas where you might be overspending. Look for areas where you can cut back and save money.  Here are some tips to curtail your unnecessary expenses: Cancel subscriptions for services you do not use. Switch to a less expensive phone plan. Spend less on dining outside. Downsize to one car to cut back on your transportation costs. Consider buying groceries in a planned way instead of impulse buying.   2. Surround yourself with people who respect your budget: In order to stick to your budget, you need to have supportive people around you. When you are trying to control your impulsive spending habits, they can be your support group. If you want to keep your spending in check, avoid hanging out with those who do not prioritise their finances. Being around people who make impulsive purchases can easily rub off on you, and you may end up buying unnecessary items as well. To build a sustainable and responsible spending habit, surround yourself with individuals who are sensible with their money. They will remind you to stick to your budget goals. They will not pressure, advise, or tempt you to buy things that you momentarily like.   3. Public accountability: Social media is a great place to share your goals, accomplishments, and seek support from like-minded people. There are different online groups where you can find people who are good at financial planning. When you find such a group, share your budget goals there. The group members can be of great support. Keep them updated about your progress as well as any setbacks you may encounter along the way. You can also create a blog where you can write about your experiences and get feedback from your readers. Maintain transparency with your followers and friends. Public accountability will compel you to stick to your goals. It is also a great way to form new meaningful relationships and form a community of like-minded people.   4. Visualisation board: Create a visualisation board. It is not important as to how you create or stack the pictures. However, you must ensure that the board represents why you want to stick to your budget. If your retirement plans include dreams of travelling the world, owning a dream car, or building up emergency savings, be sure to include representative images on your board. Ultimately, the visualisation board should serve as a reminder of your retirement budget and keep you inspired to achieve your financial goals.   5. Review your budget: It is important to review your retirement budget regularly because unexpected situations can alter both your financial situation and goals, and your budget may need to be adjusted accordingly. For instance, if you have to pay for unexpected healthcare costs or home repairs, you need to re-evaluate your sources of income such as pension and investment income and adjust your budget accordingly.   Looking for a senior living community in Bangalore?    Explore our premium retirement homes. How to create a perfect space for your hobby: useful insights by one of the leading retirement homes in Bangalore

April 20, 2023

Categories : Senior Living Tips

When you have a hobby, it is important to create an ideal space for it. You must determine your preferences before you begin preparing. If you have a strong interest in books and reading, you will need a library or study room. If your creativity is best expressed through painting, you should consider an art studio or room devoted to your art supplies. Once you know what kind of space you want, it is easy to prepare for it in advance. As one of the leading retirement homes in Bangalore, we share with you some of the useful insights on creating a space for your hobby.  1. Create a separate space: If you have decided on a hobby, assign a space for it in your home. Whatever the nature of your hobby, whether it is an indoor or outdoor activity, creating a space for it can make the experience more enjoyable and help you remain committed to it. Here are a few ways to do it:  Gardening: If gardening is your passion, carve out a small patch of land outside your home to work in. This way, you can easily monitor and appreciate the fruits of your labour without distraction. Reading: If you are an avid reader, install big shelves and put your prized possessions on display. Book lovers like yourself can also admire your collection. Create a comfortable reading space by the window so there is natural light. You can add window seating on bay windows or place a comfortable armchair with an ottoman by the shelves. Art: If you are passionate about art, set aside a room in your home as a dedicated art studio. Use it for painting or creating various handicrafts. Consider adding drawers for storage and tables and a canvas holder for your paintings. Adding tall chairs can also make for comfortable workspaces. 2. Assess your needs: Once you have picked a space, imagine yourself working in it and then plan the layout and decor. When you plan your creative space, ask yourself a few questions to make sure that your needs are met. For example, if you are into painting, you will need a canvas or drawing papers. You will also need other items such as brushes, sketch pencils, erasers, poster colours, acrylic paint, and canvas holders. Determine how much space you will need to work comfortably, what types of items you will store, how much electrical power and outlets you will require for any equipment you plan to use.   3. Choose an inviting colour scheme:  Select a colour combination for the space that makes it look bright and large. Also, the colour combination should not be overwhelming or distracting. The space should exude a warm vibe that uplifts your mood and makes you productive in your work.  You can experiment with contrasting colours or use abstract textures and patterns for an aesthetic appeal. The colours should reflect your taste and add a personal touch to the interiors. You can also add your own touches such as motivational posters, inspirational quotes, or your previous work. 4. Install the right type of lighting:  A good lighting plan includes different types of lighting to create a welcoming and productive hobby space. Here are the different types of lighting you should layer in a hobby room: Ambient or general lighting Accent lighting Task lighting   5. Keep it clean and organised: An essential component of productivity is a clean working environment. Well-laid-out shelves, bookcases, desks and drawers will help you organise the tools and accessories your hobby requires.   Looking for the best luxury senior living community in Bangalore?   Explore our retirement homes in Bangalore. Common causes for insomnia in seniors

Insomnia in seniors can have a significant impact on their physical and mental health. Seniors who have difficulty sleeping may be more likely to fall and get hurt because of their fatigue and dizziness. Also, insomnia in seniors can lead to impairment in attention, memory, and decision-making. Insomnia also impacts the mental well-being of seniors. A 2011 study found that insomnia doubles the risk of major depressive disorder. As one of the best senior citizen homes in Chennai, we share with you some of the common causes for of insomnia in seniors:  1. Changes in circadian rhythm: The circadian rhythm is the body’s internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. With progressing age, the circadian rhythm of the body gradually changes. The hormone melatonin, produced by the pineal gland in the brain, plays a key role in regulating the circadian rhythm. As people age, their bodies produce less melatonin. Seniors should maintain a consistent sleep routine that will help regulate their circadian rhythm.   2. Lifestyle factors: Seniors often have disrupted sleep cycles because of lifestyle factors such as napping during the day, drinking caffeinated beverages, or consuming alcohol before bed. It is important that seniors limit their consumption of caffeine and alcohol, as well as practise a healthy lifestyle. Also, seniors should try to limit their daytime napping to a short nap.    3. Medical conditions: Health issues such as chronic pain, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory problems, and neurological conditions can cause insomnia. Seniors who experience erratic sleeping patterns should consult doctors about treatment options. They can develop a treatment plan that addresses the insomnia as well as its underlying medical condition.    4. Medications: In order to manage their health, seniors often take multiple medications which can affect their sleep cycle. Hence, it is recommended that seniors consult with their doctors to determine whether adjusting their medication regimen could help them fall asleep more easily at night. By speaking with their doctors, seniors can explore potential alternatives or adjustments to their medication that could improve their sleep quality and overall health.   5 . Stress and anxiety: As seniors experience significant life changes such as retirement, bereavement, or chronic illness, they may develop heightened levels of stress and anxiety. Excessive stress and anxiety can disrupt their natural sleep patterns, leading to difficulty falling asleep or waking up at irregular intervals. To manage their anxiety levels, seniors can try relaxing activities such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.    6. Sleep apnea: Many seniors suffer from sleep apnea, a disorder that causes breathing interruptions during the night. This can lead to daytime fatigue and poor-quality sleep. Seniors who suffer from sleep apnea should consult with their doctor or healthcare provider to discuss their symptoms and determine if a sleep study is necessary.   7. Restless leg syndrome (RLS): Seniors who suffer from RLS  often experience an overwhelming urge to move their legs. This condition can cause daytime fatigue and disrupt their sleep cycle.    Managing insomnia: useful tips for seniors  Here are a few tips that seniors can follow to manage their insomnia and improve their sleep quality: 1. Establish a consistent sleep routine: Establishing a consistent sleep routine is important for seniors to regulate their circadian rhythm and enhance their sleep quality.  2. Create a relaxing sleep environment: For a regular and peaceful sleep schedule, seniors should create a relaxing sleep environment that promotes sleep. They should keep the bedroom dark and cool, use a comfortable mattress and pillows, and install soundproof bedroom windows.   3. Limit stimulants: For uninterrupted sleep, seniors should limit their caffeine and alcohol intake, especially before bedtime. Caffeine in beverages can disrupt sleep by blocking the adenosine receptors in the brain. Also, alcohol can make it harder for seniors to fall asleep. 4. Crime prevention tips for seniors by one of the leading retirement communities in India

By being proactive and taking preventative measures, seniors can feel more secure and confident in their daily lives. Seniors should also stay up-to-date with local crime trends and take note of any changes in their neighbourhood that may affect their safety. As one of the leading retirement communities in India, we share some of the steps that seniors can take to protect themselves from crime and reduce their risk of becoming a victim. 1. Pay close attention to surroundings: They should be vigilant when travelling to unfamiliar places. Also, they should avoid poorly-lit places or areas that feel unsafe. Seniors must keep their wallets and identity documents in a secure location and carry their cell phones with them when leaving the house so that they can easily get in touch with their family members in case of an emergency. 2. Install a security system: Security systems typically include motion sensors, security cameras, and alarm bells that can detect unusual activity and deter potential intruders, thereby ensuring safety. Also, seniors should always use a peephole or intercom to identify visitors before opening their doors. They should always be careful about opening the door to strangers. They should not let anyone into their house unless they are certain that the person is trustworthy. 3. Proper lighting: Intruders often use darkness to their advantage when breaking into homes. Hence, seniors should install external lights and mount them high enough so they cannot be tampered with. When seniors are away from home, timers and home-automation tools can be used to make it seem as if someone is in the house.  4. Store valuables such as cash or  jewellery in safes and lockers: To protect their valuable items, seniors should store them in secure safes and lockers. They should avoid leaving valuables lying around the house in plain sight. 5. Draw curtains and blinds: Drawing curtains and blinds can prevent burglars from easily assessing a home’s layout and the location of valuable items.  6. Exercise caution when approached by strangers in public: Seniors should be careful when approached by strangers, because they may become victims of pickpocketing or other forms of theft. 7. Buddy system: Seniors are encouraged to adopt the buddy system, which involves leaving their homes accompanied by someone. This companion can be a friend, family member, or neighbour who can provide support and assistance to seniors when they are outside.  8. Careful with finances: Seniors should be careful of scam artists who may try to trick them into giving away their personal information, such as PINs and OTPs.  Also, seniors should never disclose their personal or financial information to anyone over the phone or the internet. Positive Ageing Tips

“Optimism for me is not a passive expectation that things will get better; it is a conviction that we can make things better.” Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation As you grow old, positive thinking plays an important role in how you perceive life and the challenges you face. Often it is thought that positive thinking is avoiding the challenges of life. Instead, positive thinking is about seeing challenging situations in a positive light. But how do you stay positive in the wake of adverse situations? Well, just like meditation or yoga, staying positive is a practice.  Here we share with you a few useful tips to consciously cultivate positive thinking in your daily life: Keep a gratitude journal: One of the easiest ways to think positive is to be grateful for all the good things you have in life. Maintaining a gratitude journal is a powerful way to connect with your positive emotions. If you are struggling to find what to write about, you can start using gratitude apps or easy-to-use gratitude journals. They come with a range of useful prompts that make it easy for you to reflect on the happiest moments of the day. Repeat positive affirmations: When you say something enough times, you are likely to believe it. This holds true for both positive and negative aspects of your life. Therefore, it is a good idea to fill your life with positive talks. You can either start your day with different positive affirmations or if you have a favourite affirmation then you can keep repeating that. You can get your favourite positive affirmation framed and hang it at a place where you can see it daily. Avoid the company of negative people: The saying goes, “You are the company you keep.” So it makes sense that when you associate with other pessimists, you are likely to feel negative. Identify positive people in your life and meet them regularly. Catching up with a jovial friend is definitely going to lift your spirits. Looking for retirement homes that promote positive ageing? Launches hashtag #LoveBeyondAge for Senior Citizens One is never too old to celebrate love. Holding steadfast to the belief, India’s largest senior living community operator, Columbia Pacific Communities launched a unique initiative #LoveBeyondAge, amplifying the voice of the elders on Valentine’s Day and dismissing age-old ideas of senior citizens being too old to find, express or enjoy romantic love.   Often Valentine’s Day is associated with the young, and love is marketed and celebrated as a young person’s thing. Meanwhile, seniors are deemed to have grown out of love and romance. Breaking such stereotypes, Columbia Pacific Communities released a vox pop video showcasing the perspectives of both seniors and millennials and their ideas about love, romance and celebrating the day of love. Speaking about the initiative, Piali Dasgupta, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Columbia Pacific Communities, said “We tend to have an ageist attitude towards love, almost adjudicating that one loses the ability to express and celebrate love as one grows older. These beliefs cannot be farther from the truth. The #LoveBeyondAge initiative beautifully shows how the expressions of love become stronger and more real as one ages. Seniors have lived a lifetime of love, conflict, and finding love again. In matters of true love, it is they who have a lesson or two more to teach the Gen Y and Z and therefore should not be excluded from the mainstream/pop culture depiction of love.” Society at large seems to have a cringe element associated with seniors displaying affection and eschew such narratives as much as possible. Even on celluloid, there’s rarely any story on elderly love. However, the vox-pop video proved that love has nothing to do with age and showed the most romantic and graceful expressions of love by seniors. It also featured elderly social media influencers sharing their views on love. Companionship, love, and togetherness continue to play an important role in the lives of seniors and love transcends the majorly materialistic and physical urges, while becoming more emotional, pure, sensual, and graceful amongst seniors. The core brand purpose of Columbia Pacific Communities is to popularize the concept of positive ageing and shatter all age-related stereotypes. Love is an important element of positive aging. The initiative does not just celebrate love amongst seniors but also demolishes false notions about seniors shying away from celebrating Valentine’s Day. This is not the first time Columbia Pacific Communities has encouraged the expression of love among seniors. Last year, the organization’s initiative ‘#ExpressionsOfLove’ on the occasion of Valentine’s Day saw a collaboration with Taj Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru for an elaborate, 100 dishes lunch for three couples to celebrate love in all its myriad forms and glory. This year with #LoveBeyondAge, Columbia Pacific Communities has raised a pertinent question on our comprehension and view of love and its expressions amongst seniors in our society.
