Reasons you should not ignore signs of hearing loss: insights curated by one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore

December 16, 2022

Categories : Senior Health Tips

With age, it is common to experience gradual loss of hearing. However, this does not mean seniors should ignore hearing loss. If they find themselves turning the TV up a little louder or asking people to speak up or repeat what they said, it is a good idea that they should visit an ENT specialist and get their ears checked. Hearing loss, when not treated, can adversely affect the quality of life. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we share some of the reasons why seniors should not ignore signs of hearing loss:   1.Hearing loss can affect mental health: When seniors lose their hearing ability, it can make them feel a bit lost and experience cognitive decline. It has been found that even mild hearing loss can increase the risk of dementia. Hearing loss can also slow the response time and seniors may get anxious worrying that they are going to miss parts of the conversation. This can make everyday conversations stressful.   2. Hearing loss can increase the risk of falls Falling affects seniors physically and mentally, leading to limited mobility and  decreased quality of life. But not many seniors know that hearing loss can increase the chances of falls. According to a study, hearing loss can significantly increase the odds of falling in older adults. It could be because hearing loss causes seniors to have less awareness of their environment. When people walk, the ears pick up cues that help with balance. Hearing loss could make the brain work harder just to process sound. This subconscious multitasking may interfere with maintaining a steady gait. This could increase the likelihood of tripping and falling.   3. Hearing loss can compromise personal safety Hearing loss can reduce awareness of surroundings, making it difficult for seniors to hear vehicle horns, alarms, smoke detectors, and other warning alerts.  This can jeopardise their personal safety.   4. Hearing loss can affect the mood Losing hearing ability can cause a drastic change to a senior’s everyday life. This can lead to feelings of anger and frustration, affecting a senior’s everyday mood. The more seniors are in denial about hearing loss, the harder it can get them to accept the condition.   5. Hearing loss can hamper social interactions Not being able to hear conversation properly can cause seniors to withdraw from friends, family, and social events. This can not only lead to social isolation but also depression. The feelings of loneliness can lead to other problems such as high blood pressure, elevated stress hormones , and weak immune systems. Insights on signs and causes of vitamin deficiency curated by one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore

December 14, 2022

Categories : Senior Health Tips

Vitamins are important nutrients for maintaining optimal health. However, sometimes one may not get enough vitamins, causing nutritional deficiencies. If you are a senior looking for information on the signs and causes of vitamin deficiency, here is a useful read. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we share with you some of the signs and causes of vitamin deficiency:   1.Brittle hair and nails: One of the causes of brittle hair and nails is biotin deficiency. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that helps to break down carbohydrates and fats, and it also plays a role in maintaining skin and hair health. The symptoms of biotin deficiency can include thinning or splitting hair, brittle nails, and dry skin. While these symptoms are not life-threatening, they can be frustrating and difficult to deal with. Foods rich in biotin include:   Sunflower seeds Cooked eggs, especially egg yolk Dairy products, including milk and cheese Whole grains Green peas, legumes, and lentils Carrots, cauliflower, and mushrooms Organ meats, including liver and kidney Seafood   2. Mouth ulcers: Mouth ulcers are a common type of lesion that can be caused by lack of vitamin B and iron in the diet. As per a study, around 28% of patients with recurrent mouth ulcers have deficiencies in riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamine (vitamin B1), and pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Some of the good sources of vitamin B include:   Eggs Mushrooms Peas Meat Milk Fortified breakfast cereals Plain yoghurt Nuts Fish Some of the good sources of iron include:   Dried fruit Wholemeal pasta and bread Dark leafy green vegetables Nuts Legumes Tofu Oats   3. Bleeding gums: If you are suffering from bleeding gums on a regular basis, it could be a sign of vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that helps with wound healing, preventing cell damage, and boosting immunity. Since your body cannot produce vitamin C on its own, you need to get it through your diet. Some of the sources of vitamin C include: Bell peppers Tomatoes White potatoes Strawberries Cruciferous vegetables 4. Hair Loss: Although there are many potential causes of hair loss, deficiencies of certain nutrients are known to be a major contributing factor. For example, low levels of thyroid hormones and iron can lead to hair loss. However, one of the most common causes of hair loss is a deficiency of niacin, which is also known as Vitamin B3. Niacin plays an important role in keeping the hair healthy and strong. In severe cases, niacin deficiency can even cause complete baldness. Some of the good sources of vitamin B3 include:   Red meat Fish Poultry Brown rice Nuts and seeds Bananas Legumes 5. Skin rash: Itchy skin is a common symptom of vitamin B6 deficiency. Vitamin B6, which is also known as pyridoxine, plays a key role in boosting immune function and metabolism. It has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some of the good sources of vitamin B6 include:   Milk Salmon Eggs Chicken liver Carrots Sweet potato Spinach Green peas Chickpeas Bananas Avocado Cereals Looking for premium retirement communities in Bangalore that promote healthy ageing? Our premium senior citizen home in Bangalore is designed to offer a worry-free retirement lifestyle. Cholesterol myths you must stop believing: Useful insights by premium retirement homes in Bangalore

November 20, 2022

Categories : Premium retirement homes in Bangalore | Retirement gated communities

High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart diseases. With age, the level of bad cholesterol tends to rise and therefore, seniors must be especially careful to maintain their cholesterol levels. Surprisingly, there are still many myths surrounding cholesterol levels. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we have curated some of the common myths about cholesterol that seniors must stop believing in:   Myth 1: Seniors would know if they have high cholesterol:   Bad cholesterol is referred to as the silent killer because it does not cause any symptoms until it is too late. High cholesterol levels can lead to atherosclerosis or the narrowing of the arteries, which can then cause a heart attack or stroke. Most people with high cholesterol do not have any symptoms until they experience one of these complications. That is why it is important for seniors to get their cholesterol levels checked regularly.   Myth 2: All cholesterol is bad:   Good cholesterol is important for the human body. Not only does it play a vital structural role in cell membranes, but it is also necessary for making new cell membranes. It also plays an important role in making vitamin D and important hormones such as cortisol and sex hormones.     There are two types of cholesterols:   LDL or low-density lipoprotein: It is considered as the “bad” type of cholesterol because it can build up in the arteries and create plaque, which can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. HDL or high-density lipoprotein: It is considered as the “good” type of cholesterol because it helps to remove other types of cholesterol from the body and reduce the risk of stroke. Although both LDL and HDL are necessary for the body, it is important to maintain a healthy balance between the two. Too much LDL can lead to serious health problems, while too little HDL can also be detrimental to health.   Myth 3: Women do not have to worry about high cholesterol:   High cholesterol is one of the leading causes of heart disease. As per a study, heart disease is a leading cause of death amongst women. The conditions that can affect cholesterol levels in women are:   Menopause Hormonal changes Low HDL Myth 4: Those who take cholesterol medicine need not worry: Cholesterol level is affected by two things:   What you eat What your liver produces   Often it is wrongly assumed that those who take medicines do not have to worry about cholesterol. Medications can help reduce the amount of cholesterol the liver makes. But eating an unhealthy diet can cause the cholesterol level to still go up despite intake of medicine. This means that for medicines to be effective, it needs to be supported by a healthy diet.     Enjoy an active retirement lifestyle at our premium retirement homes in Bangalore     You have worked hard to reach your golden years. Control portions:   By controlling portion sizes, you can prevent overindulging and reduce the risk of binge eating. Here are some of the ways to practice portion control: Have your meals on smaller plates Have smaller portion sizes when dining out Check food labels Wait for about 20 minutes before reaching for a second helping Eat mindfully  Do not eat straight from the serving bowl    Stay hydrated: Drinking water has many benefits – it helps to flush toxins from the body, carry nutrients to cells, and lubricate joints. It also helps to regulate body temperature and aids in digestion. But did you know that drinking water can also prevent overeating? According to a study, drinking water before meals can promote weight loss amongst seniors.    Practice good sleep hygiene: As per a study, lack of sleep can cause hypertension, depression, obesity, and anxiety. Ageing brings many changes in life. While some changes are good, others can be difficult to cope with. Talk therapy is one of the best ways to deal with difficult situations that cause emotional distress. The purpose of talk therapy is to help identify emotional stressors and take steps to address them. Generally, a talk therapy session can last about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the mental health professional. Who should you talk to? There are various kinds of mental health professionals who can help you with talk therapy. Some of the common ones are: Psychiatrists. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who treats anxiety and depression. They not only offer talk therapy but can also prescribe medicines. Psychologists. A psychologist can help you learn how to cope with emotional stress. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we share with you some useful insights on benefits of talk therapy: 1. It makes you feel heard: One of the key benefits of seeking talk therapy is that you feel heard. Everyone wants to feel heard, seen, and understood. Although you may have family and friends to talk to, there are times when you wish that someone listened to you without judgement. Mental health counsellors listen and understand you. They do not judge or condemn you for anything you say or feel. 2. It gives you an opportunity to understand yourself: With age and experience, you think you know yourself well. But you must remember when circumstances change, people change and so do their perceptions of life. Your retirement is the time to rediscover yourself and your interests. As you adjust to the changes that come with retirement, having someone to discuss your apprehensions and concerns can be quite helpful. 3. It helps you see the brighter side: When you are surrounded by negative emotions, it is hard to see the good things happening in your life. Mental health counsellors can help you see positive things in life. At times, they even help you learn how to make positive changes in your thoughts and behaviours. 4. It helps you learn how to seek help: Admitting when you need help can be challenging, especially as you age. Attending talk therapy sessions is a great way to learn how to seek and receive help. Beauty over 60: skin and hair tips for senior women by one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore

Premium retirement homes in Bangalore

Women over 60 may have grandkids or even great grand kids, but that does not mean they should stop caring about their skin and hair. Healthy looking skin and hair make one feel confident. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we share a few useful skin and hair tips for senior women: Exercise regularly: An easy and all-natural way to get glowing, healthy skin is to exercise regularly. Regular exercise improves blood circulation, supplying essential nutrients to the skin. Sweating gives the skin a healthy glow by removing toxins. Exercise also promotes blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles, which helps in reducing hair loss. Eat right and hydrate: To keep your hair and skin healthy, it is important to have a fibre rich diet. Fibre increases the absorption of essential nutrients such as lutein, lycopene, and vitamin C – which are needed for collagen production. Citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, and tropical fruits are rich in fibre and they boost collagen production. Drinking water also helps hydrate skin. Select anti-ageing skin and hair products:  They should choose anti-ageing skin and hair care products that are gentle on hair and skin and at the same time address their specific concerns. It is a good idea to consult a skin care and hair care specialist before trying new products. Use sunscreen without fail: Most cases of skin cancer are found in people older than 65 years as they do not protect their skin from the harmful UV rays. Besides using hydrating skin and hair care products, extra precautions should be taken to protect skin and hair from the harmful effects of UV rays. Before stepping out, senior women should apply sunscreen and reapply to exposed skin every two hours when they are outside. To protect hair, they can wear a wide-brimmed hat and use sun-protection products for hair. Fix thinning hair with the right hairstyle:  For women over 60, short haircuts such as a classy bob or a pixie are easier to manage. These hairstyles also add volume to hair, giving the face a youthful look. Senior women can consult a hairstylist who can suggest a flattering hairstyle as per their hair texture and colour. How can seniors use lighting to create the right ambience in their homes

Lighting plays a very important role in creating the right ambience. An overlooked feature, lighting can completely transform your home from a dull and uninviting space to a vibrant and welcoming one. For an ageing pair of eyes, the right lighting can make the home not just welcoming but also improve the quality of life. As one of the premium retirement homes in Bangalore, we share a few useful tips on how seniors can use lighting to create the right ambience in homes:    1. Embrace lighting layers: When you are creating a lighting plan for your home, it is important to acquaint yourself with three basic types of lighting: Ambient lighting: Also known as general lighting, it is used to brighten up spaces uniformly. The sources of ambient lighting are chandeliers and ceiling lights.  Task lighting: If you love reading, knitting, quilting, painting, and participating in other skill-based activities that require focus and hand-eye coordination, install the right task lighting fixtures. Task lighting is used to illuminate a particular area to help you get your work done with clarity. A desk lamp is a source of task light.  Accent lighting: This kind of lighting accentuates high points of your home and creates the desired mood. Use spotlights or downlights to highlight photos, artefacts, artwork, plants, or bookshelves. Accent lighting adds a glow, making the room look cosy.    2. Increase ambient light levels: With age, the eyes need more light to see things clearly. Ambient light illuminates the entire room.  An ambient light source can be a chandelier or a tube light that disperses light all around the room.     Note: Besides adding more light fixtures, introduce mirrors, to amplify artificial and natural light.   3. Add dimmers: Installing dimmers on lighting fixtures gives you complete control over the amount of light you want. Keeping the light low for movie nights gives you the theatre experience and turning it up while reading increases convenience.    Looking for senior homes in Bangalore? Kindness and positive ageing: check these useful insights by one of the leading senior citizen homes in Bangalore

kindness

“Remember, there is no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” —Scott Adams   As you age, being intentionally kind can help you enjoy better physical, mental, and emotional health. Want to know how? Check these useful insights on kindness and positive ageing by one of the leading senior citizen homes in Bangalore:     Kindness may help you remain young: Have you ever noticed that when you do something nice for someone else, it makes you feel better too? Well, there is science behind this. When you do something kind you feel happy and when you feel happy, your body produces oxytocin. It has been found that oxytocin may slow ageing throughout the body at the cellular level. Kindness is good for physical health:Kindness also promotes physical health as it reduces stress levels by releasing feel-good hormones. According to a study, a positive emotional state lowers inflammatory responses. Kindness boosts mood: Kindness is the act of doing good for others. The act of kindness also involves an element of being altruistic. Studies suggest that kindness releases endorphins in the brain, producing a positive feeling known as the “helper’s high”. When you give to charities or help others, it activates regions of the brain associated with social connection and trust, which positively affects your mood.   You do not need a reason to be kind to people. Something as simple as lending a sympathetic ear to a friend or picking up a tab for a friend can be an act of kindness. Here is a list of acts of kindness that can make you feel happy and positive.    In addition to being kind to others, be kind to yourself. Often it is easy to acknowledge the achievements of others, but not your own. Take time to appreciate yourself and your achievements. Be kind to yourself by cultivating an inner voice that is positive and not critical most of the time.    Looking for premium retirement homes in Bangalore?
